National writing contest in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada Kicks Off
TORONTO, Oct. 1, 2015 /CNW/ - Genworth Canada is calling upon young students to help make the dream of homeownership possible for more Canadian families in need.
Today, Genworth Canada kicks off its ninth annual Meaning of Home Contest in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada. The contest invites grade 4, 5 and 6 students across Canada to submit a written essay about what home means to them for a chance to direct $50,000 to a Habitat for Humanity affiliate of their choice.
"I am proud to say that through the Meaning of Home contest, Genworth Canada has directed more than $800,000 to Habitat affiliates across the country," said Anita Booth, Director, Marketing and Community Relations with Genworth Canada. "Having spoken with many participating students and teachers over the years, it's gratifying to see how the contest has helped empower youth to effect change and raised awareness of the need for more affordable housing."
Genworth Canada donates an additional $5 to local Habitat affiliates for each entry submitted, so every grade 4, 5 and 6 student across Canada has the ability to raise money towards Habitat builds in their own community.
"The funds donated through the Meaning of Home writing contest are extremely valuable to our affiliates across the country," says Mark Rodgers, President and Chief Operating Officer of Habitat for Humanity Canada. "This contest is a role model for corporate social partnerships and we are extremely grateful to Genworth Canada and all participating students and teachers for their support."
- The Meaning of Home Contest opens Thursday, October 1 and the final date to submit entries is Monday, November 9, 2015.
- The winner receives a $50,000 donation from Genworth Canada to direct to the Habitat Affiliate of their choice, as well as an iPad, a pizza party for his or her classroom and a $1,000 donation to their school.
- Five runners up each receive $5,000 to donate to their local Habitat Affiliate, a pizza party for their classroom and an iPod.
- Students are also invited to submit a video on what home means to them. Video entries are entered into a separate draw for an iPod.
